Intensive Pre Solo Training Courses

These one week courses are aimed at those who want to make rapid advances in the early stages of their flying. For those who have recently started gliding, they will help you advance rapidly towards solo. Alternatively, they may get you back into the saddle after a long layoff. For those who have tried a bit of flying and now want to get stuck into their training, this is the course for you. If you have never flown before, this is probably the holiday for you but you may wish to try one of our trial flights or mini courses before committing to a week of flying

The course fee is capped at 550 which includes 3 months membership of the SGC. The course is based upon three students sharing a dedicated instructor and glider. The target for each day is for each student to achieve 3 winch launched soaring flights of 30 mins each or 6 winch launched circuits and landings (around 6 minutes each). Under certain circumstances, aerotows may be offered in order to help students make optimal progress. The difference in launch cost will be charged as an extra to the course. If you go solo before the end of your course, only the first three solo flights will be included in the capped price. You will, however, be free to carry on with your instructional flying for the rest of the course. Please consult our tariff page for a full list of our charges.

If the weather prevents flying for part of the day, the time will be spent in the briefing room working on gliding theory. If the weather during the week results in less than 80% of the target amount of flying, a refund cheque will be posted after the course.

Course members may take advantage of the on site accommodation where full board for the week will cost around 200 depending upon your appetite.

To book a place on a holiday course, fill out and return a course application form along with your non-returnable deposit to the Scottish Gliding Centre.  The courses are popular and early application is advisable.  To check course dates, or if you need any further information, please contact the club by phone, email or in writing.

* Under current legislation you need to be at least 14 years of age to fly solo. It is probably not worthwhile learning to fly until you are about 13 years old so that you will not get to solo level too much before you can legally fly. If you are under the age of 18 you will need your parent's permission.
