How do I learn to glide?

The most popular route for new joiners is our Learn to Glide package. See the Joining page for all the options. Our office staff will be happy to help you work out what will suit you best (see Contact). You might want to have a look at the Welcome to the SGC booklet, which aims to answer the questions new joiners have in a bit more detail than we can here.

We have a large team of BGA-qualified instructors led by the CFI (Chief Flying Instructor), and instruction is available 7 days a week in our fleet of two-seater training aircraft.

On weekdays (except Tuesdays, see below) during the day you book time with our full-time instructor.

Weekends are normal “club flying” time: you fly when it's your turn on the flying list and help out at the launch point while you're waiting.  A flying list is also in operation on Tuesdays.

During the summer we run week-long training courses and there are training groups and club flying on weekday evenings.

Portmoak is an excellent training site because the nearby hills provide soaring conditions in wind directions from north through west to south, making it easy for us to deliver structured training in suitably bite-sized chunks.
