The Scottish Gliding Centre's Mini Courses are an ideal introduction to gliding. A Mini Course lets you spend a whole day making a real start on controlling the glider yourself, unlike an Air Experience Flight which is an exhilarating experience or a thrilling day out.
A Mini Course is aimed at absolute beginners so no previous knowledge or experience is required. As the emphasis is on flying, the course fee covers as much flying as you can fit into the day.
People of all ages from schoolchildren* to retired routinely take up this exhilarating sport. You do not need to be particularly athletic or super-fit; anyone in a reasonable state of health can fly a glider**. The sport is equally suitable for both sexes.
At the end of the course you will have a thorough appreciation of what you need to learn to fly a glider and you will be able to discuss with your instructor how much flying you are likely to need to go solo.
If you decide you want to take up gliding, we can upgrade your Mini Course flight to a Learn to Glide package - contact the office for details.
Training is carried out in our modern, rugged, 2-seater, dual-control, high-performance gliders, and is given by experienced British Gliding Association (BGA) qualified instructors. All our training follows the BGA's syllabus.
We currently run our Mini Courses year-round from Monday to Friday, with the emphasis on flying rather than theory. With a maximum of 3 students per instructor and depending on the weather conditions, you can expect to fit in eight or more short flights or around one hour of soaring.
We are located very close to 2 extensive hill ridges which give soarable conditions in almost all weather conditions. Depending on the time of year, thermal or wave flying is also possible. Courses comprise 3 students for the day during summer and 2 students in winter (November to February) when daylight hours are shorter.

The small print
*Under current legislation you need to be at least 14 years of age to fly solo. It is probably not worthwhile learning to fly until you are about 13 years old so that you will not get to solo level too long before you can legally fly. If you are under the age of 18 you will need your parent's permission.
**Generally if you are fit to drive a car you are fit to fly.
People much heavier than 16 stones or unusually tall or short people may not be able to fly in our gliders. There are also a few medical conditions which may make it unsafe to fly. If you are uncertain or want to discuss things first please contact the club for further information.
Please see our tariff for details of these and other learn-to-fly courses.
